Precision Joining Technologies expertise is taking a concept from the initial thought stage and yielding a production process capable of fabricating consistent high quality assemblies. This was the routine during the years of working with nuclear weapons components. The nuclear weapons design lab would stage an initial meeting on the requirements for the part/assembly and months later the part would be fabricated in production.
Research:
Precision Joining Technologies has the facilities and/or has access to the facilities to perform welding/joining research. There are a number of small businesses which converted the nuclear weapons technologies to commercial enterprises that a close relationship has been developed with. These other businesses perform the following services:
- metallography
- Scanning Electron Microscopy(SEM)
- microprobe analysis
- surface science analysis
- non-destructive testing
- destructive testing
- controls/equipment fabrication
- machining of difficult to machine materials
- electrical testing
- mechanical testing
- …and others
Working in concert with these other businesses results in very rapid completion of the work and one source responsibility without having to contract with several different businesses to complete a project.
Process Development:
Precision Joining Technologies offers an array of welding/joining processes during the development phase of an application. Most importantly, this results in an unbiased opinion to determine which welding/joining process would be best suited for an application. This is in contrast to an equipment supplier trying to convince you to buy his equipment for the application or a facility with only one welding process trying to convince you to use their welding process for an application. In addition to the welding process selection, Precision Joining Technologies offers expertise in all aspects of the process development phase including:
- material selection for the application
- fixturing development
- thermocouple testing to monitor heat sensitive areas on an assembly
- weld testing to meet customer requirements.
Production:
Precision Joining Technologies has considerable equipment to meet your production schedules. Equipment has been duplicated for most of the processes offered. The duplication of equipment is for two reasons. First, to handle increased production schedules. Second, to immediately have the capability to shift work to the other machine in the event of an equipment failure. The laser welding equipment as well as other equipment items are very expensive complicated pieces of equipment. These can take considerable time to return to normal operation after an equipment failure. In addition to having duplicate equipment, Precision Joining Technologies staff is trained in the repair and maintenance of the equipment used in the facilities. Precision Joining Technologies also offers calibration of the equipment (against NIST standards) used in production. Extensive very unique calibration procedures has been developed for the laser equipment which ensures a repeatable process. Very few if any laser welding facilities offer equipment calibrated to this extent.
