Laser Welding Expertise

Precision Joining Technologies personnel have been involved with the laser welding of critical components since the inception of laser welding of metal components in the 1970’s. Precision Joining Technologies President Joseph Kwiatkowski expertise on this subject was acknowledged by the industry as the author of the section entitled “Microjoining with Nd:YAG Lasers” in the latest edition of the Laser Institute of Americas Handbook of Laser Materials Processing.

What We Do

Nd:YAG Laser Welding

The pulsed Nd:YAG laser welding process is very unique in that it is the lowest heat input fusion welding process available to the industry and thus yields no/minimal distortion of the workpiece.

Gas Tungsten Arc Welding

The gas tungsten arc welding process heats and melts the materials to be welded with an electric arc established between a tungsten electrode and the workpiece.

Micro-Resistance Welding

The resistance welding process produces coalescence of the metals at the weld joint as a result of the heat generated by the resistance of the work to the flow of electric current.

Micro-Ultrasonic and Thermosonic Welding

The ultrasonic welding process is a solid state (no melting of materials) welding process. The weld is produced by the application of high frequency (60KHz) vibratory energy as the parts are held together with force.

Micro-Soldering and Brazing

Micro-soldering/brazing processes use low melting temperature alloys to join materials. The parts to be joined do not melt, instead the solder/braze materials melt to effect a metallurgical bond.

Laser Weld Mold Repair

One of the first processes developed by Precision Joining Technologies during the start up phase of the company was the laser welding repair of molds. This was initiated by a call from a former co-worker who asked the question if the laser could be used to repair a broken corner of a mold.

Innovation

One of the unique processes at Precision Joining Technologies is pulsed Nd:YAG laser welding with automated filler wire addition. This filler wire feed system was developed in the 1980’s for the purpose of adding filler wire to allow for successful welding of difficult to weld materials that make up nuclear weapons components. Thus, materials previously unweldable with the laser welding process can now be successfully joined using the appropriate filler wire material. At the time of development and for the following several years, this was the only automated filler wire feed system in the country which had been coupled to a Nd:YAG pulsed laser welding system.
