Nd:YAG Laser Welding

Process:
The pulsed Nd:YAG laser welding process is very unique in that it is the lowest heat input fusion welding process available to the industry and thus yields no/minimal distortion of the workpiece. The laser beam is focused down to a very small diameter onto the workpiece and melts the materials to be joined at the joint interface. It can be used to weld foils as thin as 0.001" thick. Weld penetration can be up to 0.060" deep.

Advantages:
- Minimal heat input to the base metals resulting in no or the lowest possible distortion to the assembly.
- Can be used to weld very small, intricate devices or in close proximity to heat sensitive locations on the assembly such as glass-to-metal seals without disturbing the seal.
- Extremely precise control of the weld metal location.
- Little to no discoloration of weld and the surrounding base material.

Materials That Have Been Laser Welded:
Stainless steel alloys, hastelloy alloys, inconel alloys, aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, monel alloys, steel alloys, copper alloys, precious metals, a variety of specialty materials including kovar, 21-6-9, tool steels, and refractory alloys.

Unique Capabilities:
Filler wire system which automatically feeds 0.006"- 0.020" diameter filler wire into the weld pool during laser welding. This allows control of weld metal chemistry that prevents weld cracking on difficult to weld metals. This is the only filler wire feed system in the country which has been coupled to a pulsed Nd:YAG laser welding system.

Laser Equipment:
- Two fully automated, 400 watt, four axis (X,Y,Z, and rotary) CNC systems.
- Two manual, single pulse, 50 Joules/pulse systems.
